Drive Out the Bush Regime Bus Tour
Giving a bold focal point to the summer, the World Can’t Wait Drive out the Bush Regime Bus Tour will take off starting on July 4th from New Orleans, LA. This Bus Tour aims to galvanize sentiment against Bush into massive opposition. Bringing forward thousands of organizers from the heartland of America who hate the direction that the Bush regime has been taking the country. The Bus tour will be a major catalyst in changing the whole terms of debate and dynamic in this country towards driving out the Bush Regime. This is a freedom ride – not unlike the one that changed the course of history in 1961. This time, there is even more at stake. Appropriately, the bus tour will begin in New Orleans, a city of rich African- American history that has been left to rot, and plans of privatization are a means for ethnic cleansing and provide a glimpse of the horrific future represented in the Bush Program. The Bush Administration's criminal response during, and after Katrina has left families from New Orleans scattered across the country. The horror has not ended. Prisoners who were trapped in neck deep water for days are still being held because there are no public defenders. People have been kept from returning to their homes and bodies continue to surface in the 9th ward. Meanwhile the city officials like the representative from Baton Rouge, Republican Richard Baker claims that 'God cleaned up' the public housing for them in New Orleans. Katrina stands now as a 21st century symbol of racism - back with a vengeance. The Bus Tour will start from there and join the team of student volunteers who have been participating in the rebuilding efforts in New Orleans while spreading the Drive out the Bush Regime message. Louisiana is following the footsteps of South Dakota where abortion was criminalized in March. In Rapid City, South Dakota Planned Parenthood is the only state clinic doing abortions until the ban takes effect. In South Dakota, the Oglala Sioux Nation Chief Cecelia Fire Thunder has pledged to do abortions on Indian land. We will join with these resisters, bring to them the call and challenge them to join in this movement. The tour will travel from South Dakota and on to Mississippi where Operation Rescue/Save America has called for a national mobilization to close the last clinic in Mississippi in July. The Bus tour will be there to defend the clinic and women who are demanding safe and legal reproductive health care. The next stop will be Colorado, home of Focus on the Family and other major theocratic institutions that are supported by the Bush Regime. These are the contested areas we are going into, sharp battlegrounds over what society will be like in the future if the agenda of the Bush Regime goes unchallenged. As we speak, whole states are being transformed into theocratic base areas for the extreme right. This is the "reshaping of society in a fascist direction" that is spoken to in the Call. We will bring with us the analysis that theocracy, unending wars around the world, the repression of science, attacks on women, immigrants and gay people, all of this is part and parcel of the Bush Agenda that is a harbinger of fascism. Abortion is the crown jewel of issues that fuel and feed the forces that openly dictate directions to the Bush regime. People throughout the country need to understand this and take a side. There are millions in these states that oppose this and they need to know they are not alone. Musicians and actors who come to Pensacola need to join the tour. The bus will go to Kansas where the battle over Evolution needs to be joined with a real explanation of where this is all headed. Scientists will teach evolution from the bus! Drive Out the Bush Regime Bus Tour will go to the gates of military bases calling on the people inside to join up and speak out against a regime that is guilty of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity. We invite the government whistle blowers, members of the press who are under investigation for printing the truth; leakers of atrocities, and soldiers who refuse to obey orders based on lies to get on the bus. Drive Out the Bush Regime Bus Tour will go to the border-states where programs are aimed at terrorizing immigrants. And now the unofficial vigilantes will be backed by the military – called out for permanent domestic duty. Stopping to protest symbols of the Bush Regime's base and supporters, holding speak-outs and film showings, teach-ins and community meetings, the tour will be a lightning rod for the discontent in the country. Artists, Actors, Musicians, Poets, Professors, Journalists, Scientists, Military Families, Pro-Choice Women, Black leaders, Immigrants and Gay Rights Activists – Youth and Students – will be getting on the bus. The tour will meet people at libraries, theaters, bookstores, coffee shops, gay bars, abortion clinics, youth hangouts, mosques, churches, temples, military installations, and connect with those under attack (abortion providers, the LGBTQ community, librarians, and professors). A traveling media/film crew will feed a special news blog on our website. People around the country can watch the progress of the tour on the Internet – and join it along the way. Advance crews can let communities know that the bus will arrive – and set up gatherings, rallies, and people can come out and tell their stories to national media. A full time staff in New York will be organizing high profile appearances at important stops, recruit new riders, coordinate feeder car caravans and welcoming committees, organize national and regional news coverage, raise money to support the tour and supply it with truckloads of materials. We must also be prepared for legal support and defense. All along the way, people will connect with this movement to drive out the Bush regime – will form new centers of organization in its wake, and spread the word about national demonstrations in cities large and small on October 5th.
